WESTON Begins Work on $4.8 Million Ga. EPD Remediation Contract in Atlanta
WEST CHESTER, Pa. –April 10, 2002 – Environmental contractor Roy F. Weston, Inc. (WESTON) began work this month at the Northside Drive Landfill in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Contracted by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (GAEPD), WESTON will implement a remedial action plan to close the unlined, industrial hazardous waste landfill that lies in a densely populated area next to the Georgia World Congress Center convention complex and the Georgia Dome sports complex in downtown Atlanta. The contract is valued at $4.8 million and is scheduled for completion by early next year.
WESTON will perform a variety of remediation services under the contract, including excavation of waste material and contaminated soil, installation of a slurry wall and engineered control cap, and perimeter monitoring of ambient air quality associated with the work which, in some areas, will be within 10 to 20 feet of the Alonzo F. Herndon Community Living apartment complex.
“We are extremely pleased that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has entrusted WESTON with this project and recognizes our ability to minimize the impact and disruption to the families located near the remediation site," said Patrick G. McCann, WESTON President and Chief Operating Officer. “WESTON’s network of offices in the South, including Norcross and Atlanta, are well versed in the corrective actions necessary to mitigate any present or future danger to public health and the environment. The success of our remediation efforts and the level of client satisfaction will be key to future growth in the area”
WESTON’s Manager of Atlanta Area Offices, Mark Starnes, commented, “This is the fifth landfill in as many years that WESTON has been contracted to close within the City of Atlanta. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the GAEPD as we continue to meet their highest priorities and provide comprehensive environmental and redevelopment services.”
WESTON’s Southern Division was a recent recipient of the 2001 Gold Award for Safety by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, recognizing WESTON as having safety performance at least 80% better than other companies in the industry. WESTON’s highly proactive approach and dedication to safety will contribute to the overall success of the project.
