Maxitech targets the IT industry with campaign to lead improvement in UK IT recycling record

June 28, 2004 -- With up to two million working Pentium PCs dumped in landfill sites in the UK every year, not-for-profit recycling business Maxitech is targeting the IT sector as one of four key markets to lead an improvement in the UK’s IT recycling record.

In addition, August will see the EU’s Waste and Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive come into force. It will require that redundant electrical equipment is re-used or recycled and not dumped. As heavy users of new technology, the IT sector is well placed to offer a lead both in socially responsible recycling and compliance with new legislation.

Maxitech work with businesses to help them recover up to 5% of the initial cost of redundant IT equipment by adopting its Asset Maximization service, where old equipment is collected, refurbished and sold by Maxitech on behalf of each client. This can be achieved while still meeting the requirements of the WEEE Directive, allowing businesses to minimise the financial impact of compliance.

“The IT sector is very innovative in its use of technology, but in common with many types of business, upgrades lead to disposal, and in most situations this results in landfill,” commented Peter Paduh, managing director of Maxitech.

“The arrival of the WEEE Directive means businesses now have to consider recycling sooner rather than later, and we are looking to IT organisations to take a lead, adopt a socially responsible policy and also make a good return on their IT disposals.”

The most recent example of how redundant business IT equipment can be recycled came with the June launch of the Age Concern Islington and Maxitech’s Appeal for Computers for Older People. Recycled computers were given away to older people who are involved with Age Concern Islington's empowering work with local older people.
