Engineering Firm Selected as Finalist in National Innovation Competition

March 18 2004--Jones Edmunds & Associates placed as one of four national finalists for its collaborative effort and design of the patented Bioreactor-Ready Bottom Liner System.

The Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF) 2004 Charles Pankow Award for Innovation is a national award recognizing the contributions of organizations representing diverse industries who worked together and were successful in demonstrating innovative design, materials, and/or construction-related research and development transferred into practice that increases productivity and performance in the industry. The Jones Edmunds Solid Waste team collaborated with Tenax Corporation, the University of Florida, Comanco Environmental Corporation and the New River Solid Waste Association to develop the patented bottom-liner system.

“We are honored to be recognized with our partners as well as the other top finalists,” said John Arnold, Vice President of Solid Waste at Jones Edmunds. “The design and development of the Bioreactor-Ready Bottom-Liner System are the result of contributions from academic, commercial and industry leaders. It’s a collaborative effort I’m proud to have been a part of.”

The innovation selected by the panel of judges is the Jones Edmunds Bioreactor-Ready Bottom Liner System. The system offers construction and operation improvements over traditional “dry tomb” bottom liner systems for municipal solid waste landfills. Its features include a highly transmissive Tri-planer geonet, which replaces leachate collection lateral pipes and necessary surrounding gravel with geotextile wrap present in traditional saw-tooth bottom liner designs found in most “dry tomb” landfills. The primary advantages of the new bottom liner system include increased hydraulic performance and better accommodation of increased leachate recirculation associated with bioreactor operations; reduced potential for leachate leakage resulting from the geometry and orientation of the leachate conveyance structure; and simplified construction techniques.

The 2004 Pankow Award will be presented and winner announced in conjunction with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Outstanding Projects and Leaders Awards Gala on Wednesday May 12, 2004 in Washington, D.C.
